The first two items are the must haves, followed by a few things that I have and love.
-
The Original Cricut Maker
The Cricut Maker is a powerhouse machine, perfect for quilting and sewing enthusiasts. It comes equipped with the Rotary Blade,a FabricGrip mat, and the cutting power to handle both thick and delicate fabrics. Beyond fabric, it can also draw, score, and work with over a hundred other materials, making it an essential tool for a variety of projects.
For peace of mind, I recommend purchasing your Cricut Maker directly from a reputable distributor or Cricut's official website. This ensures you receive the full warranty and included supplies. While I’ve included some Amazon links below for convenience, you might find the best value by opting for a refurbished Cricut Maker directly from Cricut. https://amzn.to/4iagL88https://cricut.com/en-us/sale/refurbished-open-box-machines/certified-refurbished-cricut-maker/2009174.html
-Why Not the Maker 3?-
While the Maker 3 is Cricut’s latest model, it doesn’t offer significant benefits for sewing or quilting projects. In fact, you’d need to purchase the rotary blade separately, increasing the cost. For most sewists, the original Cricut Maker remains the better value without compromising on functionality. If you really REALLY want the Maker 3 here's a link to the machine and a few of the extra tools that only work with the Maker family. Maker 3 bundle - https://amzn.to/3ZoCK3M -
12” x 24” Mats
Fabric-specific mats, like the FabricGrip Mat, are designed to hold fabric securely while cutting. However, you can substitute other mats, such as the StandardGrip or StrongGrip mats, if you want to delay purchasing a fabric-specific one. To maximize value, stock up during sales and check out my tips on getting the longest life out of your mats. While I've heard you can use the generic mats, I haven't personally done so, so I can't vouch for anything other than the brand mats. https://amzn.to/3CLM8Wp
Nice-to-Have Tools for Quilting and Sewing with Cricut
-
EasyPress Mini
This small but mighty iron is one of my all-time favorite tools. With three heat settings, a perfectly sized plate, and an automatic shut-off, it’s ideal for pressing seams and small projects. I keep mine right next to my sewing machine—and since it’s often on sale, I’ve collected several to keep handy around the house! https://amzn.to/41dWAzM
-
Cricut Pens
These pens fit perfectly into Cricut machines and can be used for marking fabric, embroidery guides, or drawing intricate designs. Keep in mind that they’re water-soluble and may bleed slightly on fabric, so test first on scraps. Alternatively, there are adapters available for your favorite fabric marking pens. My favorite are the Extra Fine Point pens, especially for embroidery. https://amzn.to/3VzWM9h -
Acrylic Ruler
A 12” x 24” acrylic ruler is a game-changer. It’s perfectly sized for trimming fabric to fit your Cricut mat and includes helpful markings, such as 30°, 45°, and 60° angles. It’s sturdy, versatile, and often on sale—so grab one when you can! https://amzn.to/49cJ1m8https://cricut.com/en-us/tools-accessories/handheld-tools/rulers/acrylic-ruler-12-x-24/2004697.html

Originally designed for paper and vinyl crafting, this kit proves incredibly useful for sewing and quilting, too. The paper trimmer is perfect for cutting Foundation Paper Piecing (FPP) patterns, the small scissors are great for detail work and threads, and the scraper tool helps lift and clean mats with ease. It’s a versatile set that you’ll reach for again and again.https://amzn.to/4ePYpX3 - gold kit

Brayer
The brayer is a great tool for adhering your fabric to the mat evenly and securely. And it doubles as a seam roller for heatless pressing! This tool is frequently sold out when on sale so if you do decide to get it and see it for a good price don't wait!
**I get a small commission if you purchase from the Amazon link but no pressure, if it is cheaper somewhere else, you do you. :)
